Year 1 begins the children's journey into Key Stage One. We make this transition from Reception (EYFS) into Year 1 and the next stage in your child's learning easier by supporting them with lots of hands on learning through our inspiring and creative curriculum.
In Fox Class we learn in a variety of ways, with a mixture of formal, practical and play based learning. Children take part in whole class, group and independent activities throughout the day.
We provide a safe and happy environment where pupils and teachers work together, share ideas and experiences and encourage one another to be the best that they can be!
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes dressed in their PE kit on these days. Thank you! J
Homework is set at the beginning of each term and there are 9 activities to choose from: 3 English, 3 Maths and 3 topic linked tasks. Each week please choose one activity to complete. Homework books are collected in on a Monday and returned on a Wednesday.
We have so many fun and exciting activities planned for Foxes this year, with our new and inspiring topics!
Term Three sees us become explorers as we travel the continent of Africa in our topic this term: Amazing Africa!
We begin this terms topic by finding out about the African cloth Kente in Art, what it is, how it is made and who wore it. Developing the skills of printing and weaving, the children will go onto create their own Kente Cloth. Having looked at different African masks the children will also be designing and creating their own masks in Art.
We recap E-Safety in Computing and then use Chrome Music Lab to create digital music based on African animals. In Science, we continue looking at African animals, naming and classifying them as well as common animals and see who can make the longest food chain. We will also be working scientifically and carrying out our own investigations in Science.
In History, we will be finding out all about the life and work of Nelson Mandela, and how he made a difference.
We will be listening to African music, and playing beats and rhythms on Djembe drums in Music.
Continuing our expedition, we explore Kenya and discuss how it compares to Branston, and identify and name the seven continents and five oceans of our world in Geography.
We return to our BIG Question throughout the term: How does Branston compare to Africa?
In RE, we learn about Muslim’s views on the world and The Five Pillars of Sunni.
We discuss our value for this term, Honest and learn about local carers and protectors in PSHE and RSE.
Our focus in PE is ball skills, we explore ways in which we can move and control a ball, using our bodies and different equipment.
In Maths, we are adding and subtracting numbers to 20 and comparing numbers up to 50. We will be writing letters in English with inspiration from the story Meerket Mail by Emily Gravett.
As a school we share the same values:
LOVE KINDNESS HONESTY FORGIVENESS PERSEVERANCE RESPECT
Our value this term is HONESTY
We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning lots of new things, making friends and having fun! We will be sharing with you all the lovely things that happen in our Year 1 class so please keep visiting our website, ClassDojo and Twitter page throughout the year to find out what we are enjoying learning about.
